Sally Experience was the primary American lady in area and the youngest American astronaut to have travelled to area, having joined NASA in 1978.
On the 1983 STS-7 area shuttle mission, Experience was liable for controlling a robotic arm, and assisted in launching satellites into area. She visited area once more in 1984.
As soon as she left NASA in 1987, Experience went on to be an advocate for getting women into science, know-how, engineering and maths (STEM), writing books for each college students and academics.
She was behind NASA’s EarthKAM undertaking which permits 11-year-old college students to make use of cameras on the Worldwide Area Station to take footage of Earth from area, which they’ll then examine extra intently.
Later in life she had a relationship with Ladies’s Tennis Affiliation participant Tam O’Shaughnessy. Experience died of most cancers in 2012 on the age of 61.
